Kidz Bop Dance Party the Video Game for Wii Review

Kidz Bop the CDis a big favorite in our household. Now Kidz Bop has introduced a video game for the Wii so you and your kids can dance to your hearts content. We had a ton of fun testing out the game modes while listening to our favorite songs like Party in the USA, Paparazzi, Thriller and many more pop hits.

So if you are looking for fun family time, Kidz Bop Dance Party
 is for you.

Like the CDs, the songs are performed by kids for kids, with kid-friendly lyrics, a plus in my opinion. Enjoy five gameplay modes ranging from free play to challenge to dance off.

Pinkalicous Fans - Celebrate All Things Pink with a new line of Pinkalicious Products

Like millions of girls, my daughter has been and still is entertained by Pinkalicious. My daughter's favorite character now jumps off the pages for her to continue enjoying the character outside of the books. A full collection of products from plush dolls, dress-up clothes , bicycles and much more is now available for fans of the character to imagine, play and just plain have fun.

My daughter loves playing with the Pinkalicous large soft doll and Goldilicious unicorn. It was so cute to see how she would react to them in person versus the books or the play and it was love at first sight. She spent a lot of time arranging and rearranging her plush dolls just right. She has already taken out her Pinkalicious'  hair and pretends she is a hairdresser. Quite an experience to watch my daughter be creative about the characters, she only read a about.

Learning about Bread from Panera Bread and Tom Gumpel, Head of Bakery Development

NYC Single Mom and Tom Gumpel, VP Bread Development
Bread, Bread, Bread - I am sure you have bread at least once a day, I know I do, whether it's toast or a bagel, it's a daily must. That said, I don't really think about baking bread much. It seems like a lot of work to me.

But after attending an event hosted by Panera Bread featuring their Tom Gumpel, their Vice-President of Bakery Development (is that a dream job or what?!!) I was inspired.

Tom was really passionate about baking and really gave a great presentation not only about bread but made us  think about how bread is really a part of every country's cultural identity. Interesting.

So let's get down to brass tacks, Tom showed us two bread recipes that looked like it was pretty easy to make and of course, just plain yummy.  He made an Asiago Strata and a Chocolate Babka.

The Asiago Strata is a basically a bread pudding that can be used as an appetizer or side dish.  He suggested that we use it as replacement for potatoes or rice. I am pretty sure most people, would still want their side dish and the Strata. This bread dish was without a doubt was one of the most delightful dishes I have ever had and pretty easy to make.

The babka was also delicious and was pretty easy to make except maybe the grenache filling but that's me. For you bakers, this may not be a big issue.

As if learning how to make these two bread dishes was not enough, I actually learned a couple of secrets on how to keep bread tasting fresh.  I, obviously, have no idea about how to keep my bread fresh after I heard this.

Three days or more: As soon as you get home, cut off the portion you won’t be eating immediately and
wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Then bundle it in aluminum foil and freeze. “It’ll last a week to a week-and-ahalf, no problem,” says Gumpel. When it’s time to enjoy it again, remove the foil and plastic while the bread is still frozen, rewrap in foil, and place in a 350-degree oven for 5 to 15 minutes (depending on its size). “Just knock the chill off,” says Gumpel. “You don’t need it hot.” There’s no need to spritz it with water either. The bread will draw moisture from the inner ice crystals.

One or two days: Never refrigerate bread. “That ruins the starch, and it’ll get that day-old feel faster,”
says Gumpel. If it came in a paper sack, repackage the loaf in a plastic bag. This will help the bread retain its moisture. Note: I do this all the time. Yikes!

Here are the Recipes from the event. (Both are so worth trying)

CHOCOLATE PECAN BABKA
Makes: 3-5 Babkas
Assembly time: Dough 20 minutes (not including rest times), fillings 15 minutes each
Final Babka: 15 minutes
Bake time: 25 -35 minutes

Dough Ingredients
5 oz unsalted butter (soft)
5 oz sugar
5 oz whole milk
5 oz water
5 oz whole eggs
1 lb 13 oz bread flour
1 tblsp dry instant yeast
¼ oz salt

Chocolate Ganache Filling
8 oz semi-sweet chocolate (finely chopped)
4 oz heavy cream
1 Tblsp corn syrup

Pecan Topping
1 lb pecans (coarsely chopped)
Egg Wash
1 egg
1Tbls milk

Dough Instructions

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine all other ingredients. Place the flour mixture into bowl on top of other
  • mixer on medium speed and continue to mix for 8-10 minutes or until a smooth, homogenous dough is achievedprevent gaining a skin. Allow to rest for 30 minutes.
Turn the mixer on low speed and blend for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, scrap sides and bottom of bowl and turn
  • Remove the dough from the mixer and place on a lightly flour table or board. Cover the dough with a cloth to

After 30 minutes, divide the dough into 3-5 equally sized pieces. Round them carefully and place in the refrigerator, covered with plastic wrap.
Ganache Instructions

  • Heat the heavy cream just until it reaches a boil. Shut off the heat and stir in the corn syrup.
  • Place the finely chopped chocolate in a bowl and pour the hot cream mixture over the chocolate.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and let stand for 2 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
  • Allow to reach room temperature before using as a spread.
Assembly

  • Remove the chilled dough pieces from the refrigerator. On a lightly floured table, pin out a piece of dough into a
  • rectangle about the size of a note paper.
  • Spread about 4 T of chocolate ganache across the entire surface of the dough.
  • Take a handful of chopped pecans and cover the surface of the ganache evenly.
  • Starting from the top downward, begin rolling the babka piece into a cylinder –shape.
  • It should now be a cigar shape with the chocolate filling tucked inside.
  • Taking a sharp knife, cut down the middle of the cylinder pressing all the way to the table.
  • You will now have two halves of the cylinder separated.
  • Begin by twisting the two strands together into a simple braid.
  • Place babka onto a paper lined sheet pan.
  • Brush the babka carefully with egg wash and sprinkle pecans as a garnish.
Place in a warm area and allow to rise for two hours, brush again (carefully) with eggwash and place into a 350*F in the
oven.
Bake for about 25-35 minutes or until evenly mahogany brown.
Serve warm or room temperature.

Asiago Strata
ASIAGO STRATA
Serves: 6-8 people
Assembly time: 10-15 minutes
Bake time: 35-45 minutes

Ingredients
2 tablespoons sweetened/salted butter (soft)
1-1/2 cup milk
1 cup cream
3 whole eggs
pinch of salt
pinch of cracked black pepper
1 loaf (18 ounces) Asiago bread
1 cup Asiago cheese, shredded (or other cheese shredded)

Directions
Preparation: Pre-heat oven to 325 F. Brush the sides and bottom of 8” baking dish or casserole dish with softened butter.

Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, salt and pepper and set aside.

Assembly
  • Cut the Asiago bread across the loaf in thin, even slices, approximately ¼ “thick. Start assembly of the strata by placing bread slices on the bottom of the dish until bottom is completely covered. Sprinkle shredded Asiago cheese as necessary on the bread slices to cover completely.
  • Cover with another layer of bread slices and sprinkle cheese on top, again covering bread slices completely.
  • Continue to build the strata for as many layers as dish allows, then pour custard mixture over top of strata.
  • Cover the strata and refrigerate for 15 minutes, allowing the bread slices to soak in custard mixture.

Baking
  • Place the strata pan on a cookie sheet to catch any dripping of the custard. Set the strata in the center of the pre-heated oven and allow to bake for approximately 35- 45 minutes. The custard should gain a rich dark color and rise slightly from the pan (it will settle after removal from the oven). Carefully remove from the oven and set aside to cool for 15 minutes before unmolding.

Service
  • Carefully invert the strata by placing a 10” plate over the top of the pan and slowly flip the plate and pan over together. Place on the counter and allow the strata to fall from the pan onto the plate. If the strata does not release from the pan, cut around the sides of the pan and try to invert again.

Serve hot or warm as an accompaniment with meat and vegetables to fill out the meal

Crocktoberfest - Learning to Cook Pork

NYC Single Mom with Celebrity Mom Candace Cameron Bure

"Pork the other white meat," so goes the tagline. Sounds like an option over chickend and fish, but honestly, all I know how to cook is porkshops and applesauce (yes, it’s a Brady Bunch reference) and I don’t really do that well. I just have no idea what to do with pork.

So I was thrilled to be invited by the National Pork Board to taste the entries in the their contest to crown the  America’s Next Crock Star.

Well as though tasting yummy dishes isn’t enough, I was able to meet Candace Cameron Bure (Kirk Cameron’s sister, remember her) and Hosea Rosenberg.

Here is the line of recipes that I tasted.

Herbes De Provence Sausage

Trip-to-Tuscany Pork Tenderloin

“This Little Figgy Stayed Home”

Harvest-Thyme Pork ‘N Pears with Fennel

Kapusta Pork

All very good. And who was the winner? - Linda Cifuentes' Kapusta Pork.

Candace Cameron Bure, Winner Linda Cifuentes and Hosea Rosenberg

Fun for All at the Big Apple Circus (and promo code for Readers)

The Big Apple Circus is a tradition in our household. The show is truly unique offering a show that is both captivating and engaging. This show really memorizes my daughter.

This year, there is a new artistic director, Guillaume Dufresnoy who  produced the new show "Dance On," blending the old with the new from the numerous acrobatic acts like the mind–bending group of Mongolian contortionists to extremely limber collection of Kenyan athletes who shimmy up a pole as though gravity were a joke  to the charming Ringmaster Kevin Venardos, aided with antic abandon by star clowns Rob Torres and of course, our leggy, lovable laugh–riot Grandma (what a hoot!)

The highlight of the evening was the twelve miniature horses in an equine chorus line! Just too cute for words.

If you have a chance, definitely check out the show as it really is fun for all ages.

Freckleface Strawberry Review

Recently, we went to see Freckleface Strawberry based on the best-selling kids book by actress Julianne Moore. Little 7 year-old Strawberry is mocked and picked on my her classmates for having freckles. Freckleface Strawberry goes to great lengths to cover up her freckles even wearing a mask. These little stunts embolden classmates to declare their own quirks. Of course, this is a musical so the kids break into song to express their feelings.

What I liked about Freckleface Strawberry:
  • The cast - Hayley Podschun as Freckleface Strawberry was cute and perky just as you imagine a "7 year old" to be. The rest of cast was equally talented, funny and great songsters.
  • The show's messages -  I like that the show emphasizes people's differences and that it's okay to be different,    it's wrong to pick on people because they are different.
  • Discussion Starter for parents on bullying and/or being different - Given that bullying starts earlier than you think, the show is good discussion starter to talk to your kids about how bullying is terrible, how to react to it and be happy in your skin. I say it's never too early to start the discussion especially in light of all the bullying stories in the news. Sadly, it's only going to worse not better as our children go online. As my daughter has reached the stage where kids are really starting to tease about every little thing,  her not having a "father" is sure to provoke "teasing" comments and she needs to be able to react and also maintain her self-esteem that she is not different.
  • The music - Even though the song "Basketball" reminded me of "Get'cha Head in the Game from High School Musical but I liked the music nonetheless. It was catchy and really engaged the crowd.

What I did not like about Freckleface Strawberry.
    • Rap, Rap, Rap - This is just a pet peeve of mine that no one else seems to care nor share my annoyance is the use of rap. When the teacher broke out into a rap song, I just wanted to cringe and scream, stop the madness. That said, everyone in the audience including the kids thought it was funny. So what do I know.
Of course, the real critic is my seven year old daughter. Her assessment after the show - "I loved it." That's all you need to know, right.

Best Pals Rag Dolls by Kathy and Janet Lennon (aka the Lennon Sisters) Review

In front of the Plaza with Best Pals Lilly and Sophia

Recently, I met with the Lennon Sisters at the timetoplaymag.com 2010 Holiday Toy Preview. While there were numerous interesting toys and games at the event, it’s not often that I find a toy product  that I just love but Kathy and Janet Lennon have introduced a line of soft rag dolls, called Best Pals that absolutely captured my fancy.

The soft rag dolls are replicas of dolls that their mother and Nana gave them for Christmas in 1949. Yes, 1949. Can you imagine someone like me who has the latest gadget getting excited about a doll that was first made in 1949? Well, when it comes to certain things, I am pretty old school. Here some of the many reasons, I love the Best Pals dolls.

    • Huggability - yes, huggable. Without denigrating other dolls, these dolls are just plain huggable and a doll I can see my daughter pulling out when she goes off to college (much like Andy does in Toy Story 3) and reminiscing about how she played with them when she was kid.
    • Old School Feel - The dolls come with dresses that are made of vintage fabrics, have embroidered facial features, rag doll yarn hair which can be restyled for added play and "best pals" bead bracelets (very '50s) - too cute for words.
    • Diverse line of dolls - As a woman of color who only had "Christie," Barbie's black friend growing up, I love that the line comes with three dolls of color,  Best Pals Isabelle Original 16" Rag Doll,
Best Pals Sofia Original 16" Rag Doll, Best Pals Lily Original 16" Rag Doll two of the dolls are black (light and dark, someone in product management knows that black people are not all one color, give that person a raise) and an Asian doll. When I interviewed the Lennon Sisters, they told me that they received numerous letters from adoptive parents who had bought their dolls to take with them when they went to pick up their children for the first time. This was not their intent other than ensuring they had a diverse line of dolls that appealed to a wide range of families but what an wonderful unintended affect.  For me, I teared up when they told me that story because I would have loved to have had a Sofia doll when I went to pick up my daughter at the adoption agency.
Best Pals Sophia and Lilly ready for tea

Now I am hardly the demographic for this product. When I gave the daughter the Sophia and Lilly dolls, she was so thrilled. As you can see, she immediately took the tea set and the dolls and started playing tea with them. And when we went for a photo shoot, she had to take the dolls with her as well. They have not left her side since I gave them to her.

Along with the dolls, we received the tea set. The tea set is just adorable plus I loved it's made out of tin and comes with it's own case. My daughter had a china tea set that cost as much as the Best Pals tea set and we only have the plates left.

The holidays are around the corner, so I hope you consider adding this to your shopping list, I think your child will love them.

Disclosure: NYC Single Mom received Best Pals, Tea Set and CD for review purposes only.

Maytag and Whirlpool Cool New Washers and Dryers Event

    Whirlpool Duet

Living in New York City, there are a few dream items we all aspire to and number two on the list is having their own washer and dryer (number one is more space.)

That's why I was interested to check out the latest and greatest in washer and dryers by Maytag and Whirlpool. I was somewhat amazed at how far the company has come in terms of making their products greener, using less water per wash as well as making laundry just plain easier. In addition, to using less water, Maytag and Whirlpool washers are also able to pre-treat items and eliminate the need to iron. Woo hoo!!! One of their products even has a USB for future updates. And one line, actually sounds like a car door closing. And if you are lucky enough to have a laundry room, the colors are amazing. My photos don't do the colors justice of the line.

Our Favorite Ballerina comes to town - Angelina Ballerina Review

    (r. to l.) Amber Coartney as Viki, Amanda Yachechak as Gracie,
Whitney Meyer as Angelina Ballerina, Cassie Okenka as Alice
    and Eric Restivo as AZ
Angelina Ballerina is one of my daughter’s favorite books so much so that she even has the iPhone app (yes, there’s an app for that.)

So we were thrilled to see the new Angelina Ballerina musical featuring all her friends Alice, Gracie, AZ and their teacher, Ms. Mimi.

Angelina and her friends are excited because a special guest is coming to visit Camembert Academy! Because of their special guest, Angelina and her friends get to perform all types of dance, from hip-hop, modern dance, the Irish jig and of course, ballet for their famous visitor. But wait, Angelina doesn’t arrive early enough to sign up to perform a ballet and has to choose another dance. Goodness, how can Angelina Ballerina not do a ballet, after all she is not called Angelina  Ballerina for nothing. Well, she comes up a solution and impresses her special guest visitor.

My daughter with Angelina Ballerina, Whitney Meyer

With author of Angelina Ballerina, Katherine Hollabird

What I liked about the Angelina Ballerina, the musical:
    • Angelina Ballerina the character -  She is such a positive and upbeat character
    • Emphasing responsibility – Loved the fact that if you are late, then there are repercussions. Because she was late for the sign up, she did not get her first choice to dance ballet but came up with an alternative.
    • Dealing with disappointment – Another great message; you don’t always get what you want.
    • The cast – All the actors were exuberant and peppy as you would expect. The actress playing Angelina was perfect.
    • The music by Ben Morss and lyrics by Susan DiLallo- The music was catchy,  uplifting and had happy beat.

What I did not like about Angelina Ballerina, the musical.
    • Inclusion of hip-hop- this is just a pet peeve of mine. I am sure there was a concscious effort to have a variety of dances that need to be performed but it just bugs me for some reason.
    • The costumes – again, this is something that the kids probably did not notice but the flesh - toned leotards for all the characters were so off in color from the rest of the costume that it was hard to concentrate.
If you are looking for an entertaining, musical experience, and your child is into Angelina Ballerina ballet, or dance,  I recommend you put the show on your activities to do list. My daughter was captivated by the performance.

Clone Wars Adventures Online Game Review - Family Friendly Fun for Fans to Play

Photo Courtesy of Sony Online Entertainment

Good News,  Star Wars fans or should I say The Clone Wars Adventure fans (for the record, I am old school and love the movies), Sony Online Entertainment has introduced a free-to-play, action packed virtual world, The Clone Wars Adventures.

This virtual world allows the new generation of Star Wars fans, the opportunity to be the next great hero of the Republic and take their rightful place alongside the Jedi, Padawan and Clone Troopers.

Players can speed through space in a starfighter, take out waves of battle droids in Tower Defense or test their brains with challenging Droid Programming puzzles. Players can also purchase legendary Star Wars outfits, items and accessories through micro-transactions using Station Cash, SOE’s virtual currency.

I was able to see the game up close and personal this week. Now as someone who owns no game consoles and doesn't play online games, I thought it was pretty cool and obviously if you are a Star Wars fans, this will be a lot of fun and provide hours of fun.

What I liked about Star Wars®: Clone Wars Adventures:

Customization: Kids can go online to experience exciting thrills as they are able to duel iconic adversaries with their own custom lightsaber (love it), speed through the galaxy in your starfighter, defeat enemies and take down starships. They can create avatars for themselves even giving them names. Note any names that are not on the list must be approved.

Play Free or Upgrade: Clone Wars Adventures is a free-to-play game, but players who want to take the galactic action to the next level can purchase a monthly membership starting at $4.99 a month. Players can also buy cool Star Wars universe items from within the game through micro-transactions using Station Cash. Parents, food for thought, Station Cash is something to consider buying as rewards for predetermined behaviour (every family is different so I won’t make suggestions here), birthday or holiday gifts. For all you frugalistas, there are tons of games to keep your kids occupied before they will asking to upgrade.

Minigames & More: From Droid Programming to Speeder Bike Racing, Clone Wars Adventures puts you in the driver seat to experience epic action in immersive minigames that take you to your favorite locations in the galaxy. Become the proud owner of a tricked out Droid pet (warning this required upgrading) or throw a party in your player house. I found this to be the fun part.

Kid-Friendly: Parental controls allow for the customization of safety options, including pre-canned chat and playtime settings for younger players. As it was demonstrated, there are controls for safe chatting but like any online play, parents need to monitor their kids.

This was a definitely a lot of fun to play and the graphics were amazing. I did not think the violence was bloody or gross like in other video games and the age recommended is definitely the appropriate age group for this game.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and up, with content descriptors for Crude Humor and Fantasy Violence. Since this is online game and you have the primary access to the computer, I would recommend checking it out first before allowing your child to start playing it.

To play the game, visit http://www.clonewarsadventures.com/

Have Allergies or Sinus Congestion? Introducing WaterPik SinuSense™ Water Pulsator Giveaway ClOSED

Congrats to giveaway winner Melissa M.

This week, I went to a presentation sponsored by Water Pik® to introduce the benefits of sinus washing as part of a natural daily routine to keep our sinus passages clear of congestion, allergens and everyday debris, reducing the risk of cold and allergy symptoms and to view their new portfolio of sinus wash products, SinuSense™.

Yes, sinus washing invokes the natural "eww" response but my doctor recommended sinus washing years ago as I have allergies and get congested on a regular basis. I, pretty much, gave up due to the messy nature and the difficulty in the products that I tried.

Based on the multitude of reasons (difficult to use, messy, don't want to waterboard myself) that consumers had with current products on the market, Waterpik® has developed  a product line that is comfortable, approachable and easy to use. SoftSeal™ Nozzle is designed to comfortably fit, One-Touch FlowControl™ can  control the water flow, One-Way FlowControl™Valve prevents back flow to maintain solution purity and Soothing Saline Easy Pour Packs are easy to pour and perfectly measured.

There are four products in SinuSense™in the line.
    Neti Pot

The Waterpik® Brand's proprietary neti pot provides a gravity-fed water flow for the gentlest sinus cleansing available. This traditional neti pot is made with performance and comfort enhancements to make breathing better easier than ever. For ages 4 and up, $14.99

    Squeeze Bottle

The soft, curved shape bottle is easy to hold an squeeze and the one-way FlowControl™prevents backflow to maintain solution priority. For ages 4 and up, $14.99

    Water Pulsator

First and only handheld sinus water pulsator on the market. Battery-powered device features a comfortable custom fit nozzle and soothing Saline formula with eucalyptus oil and aloe vera extract. Ages 6 and up, $39.99

    Neti Bottle

Waterpik® Brand's proprietary neti bottle takes a unique approach to the traditional neti pot with an enhanced design and comfort grip for a gravity-fed water flow that provides the gentlest sinus cleansing available. For ages 4 and up, $14.99

Waterpik® is giving away Water Pulsator to one NYC Single Mom Reader the opportunity to test out one of their products to see the benefits of sinus washing.
