Galli’s Fairytale Theater Presents Little Red Riding Hood

Galli's Fairytale Theater is be enchanting young audiences with the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Galli’s Little Red Riding Hood is an uplifting remake of the original Grimm story.

Little Red gets lost in the woods and engages its audience in song, dance, and comedy along her journey to grandmother’s house.   The Wolf is almost likable, and definitely funny when he asks the kids to help him find Little Red.  “This musical telling of the fairy tale encourages children to express their feelings, and overcome their fears,” said Dr. Tatjana Maya, Director of Galli Theater.

NYC Single Mom Meets the Deen Brothers - Why Not Make Tonight A Sandwich Night

NYC Single Mom with the Deen Brothers (I had no idea Paula Deen had kids)

Did you know that Americans eat approximately 300 million sandwiches each day, with nearly half of those being consumed at lunch and just a quarter at dinner?

The Grain Foods Foundation has partnered with Jamie and Bobby Deen, hosts of the Food Network’s “Road Tasted” and sons of Paula Deen, to encourage families nationwide to make one night a week Sandwich Night.

“Sandwiches have been a big part of our family’s life ever since our early success with our sandwich cart,
the Bag Lady,” says Jamie Deen. “We hold a weekly Sandwich Night now because it allows the whole
family to be creative, experiment and have fun. Plus, we know sandwiches are a nutritious choice for
dinner.”

Last week, I attended an event hosted by the Grain Foods Foundation and the Deen brothers discussing incorporating more whole grains into our diet. The sandwiches on the menu were quite delicious and I must admit was an "aha" moment.  Why not save myself time, effort and money by making a nutricious sandwich paired with fruit and vegetables and/or a salad? Let's face it, slaving over a stove gets old seven days a week. And it's an easy way ot get more grains into our daily diet which will help us fight heart disease, diabetes and birth defects.

An amazing array of healthy sandwiches and fruit were served

To help us budding sandwich chefs, the Grain Foods Foundation has created an Endless Sandwich recipe
database at gowiththegrain.org where consumers can download recipes and add their own sandwich
favorites as well as features exclusive recipes created by the Deen brothers.

@gaynycdad - "Look at all that I prepared for you" Seriously, the sandwiches were delicious

To get more tips and recipes from the Deen brothers and to add your favorite recipe to the Endless
Sandwich recipe database, visit www.gowiththegrain.org or GoWithThe Grain on Facebook.

Want to win a chance to Share a Sandwith the Deen Brothers in their hometown of Savannah, GA, then head to Grow with The Grain Facebook page and enter to win.

Enter to Win Free Tickets from Manhattan Children's Theatre Show - Name The MCT Mascot (Contest Ends Oct 6)

The other day, employees showed up at the Manhattan Children's Theater and were surprised to find a bear wandering around in the forest around Rapunzel's tower. He seemed lost and confused, but was a nice enough bear, which is good because he's ENORMOUS.

After some careful discussion, and a quick inventory of all the honey and salmon we could find in Tribeca, they decided to keep him as a mascot for Manhattan Children's Theatre.

There was just one problem: he didn't have a name.

“Well, that won't do,” they said. “A bear ought to have a name! If only so we can be specific about who ate all the Goldfish we bought.”

So now it's up to all of you, kids out there: name our brand new bear mascot.

What's the prize if I win the naming contest?

1st Prize
FOUR FREE TICKETS!

2nd Prize
HALF PRICE TICKETS! (limit 4)

3rd Prize
FIVE DOLLARS OFF tickets! (limit 4)

Want to win? (Of course you do.) Here are a few suggestions:
  • Be funny! We're very silly people and we love to laugh. Think about the things that bears like and make a joke out of it.
  • Be creative! We want our bear to be named something interesting, not just “Ed the Bear”
  • Maybe name your bear after a celebrity or a famous person from history. Something like “Abearham Lincoln”, but better.
  • It's always fun to give a bear an official title, like “Dr. Fuzzy” or “Professor Honeycomb” or something.
  • Just have fun! Again, we are quite silly. We're going to pick the names we think are the funniest, most original and most creative. Chances are, if it makes you laugh it'll probably make us laugh too.

Enter as many times as you want!

How do I enter?

Just send your suggestions, along with your name and age, in one of these three easy ways:

Send an e-mail at mctnewyork@gmail.com
Put your suggestion on the MCT Facebook page
Fill out an entry form at their theatre at 52 White Street

Suggestions are not being accepted now through Wednesday October 6th, with winners announced on Monday October 11th.

Good luck! Their Facebook page will be updated with favorite submissions along the way, and fans will be providing comments on the ones they like.

Winners will be selected by a panel of MCT Staff Members: Managing Director Chris Alonzo, Educational Director Jodie Pfau, and Production Manager Christie Santiago.

*This offer good for tickets through January 1st, 2011

HP Printer Holiday Preview

sThis week, I attended a Holiday Preview of the newest line of HP Printer products. I must admit that I do not own a HP printer but after seeing their innovative line up of products with all the bells and whistles, I was sold. Now, we just have to get Santa to notice my wish list of tech products.

HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One Printer

The HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One  — Combines the full features you expect from an HP All-in-One with wireless web browsing and access to apps on a detachable 7-inch full-color touchscreen for mobile freedom in the home.   The detachable touchscreen can also be used as an eReader leveraging the Barnes and Noble eBookstoreand other multi-media features including a music player. This printer was by far my favoriteI loved the detachable touchscreen, if I did not already have an iPad this would be the perfect printer for me. I also loved that you can send to print from anywhere from the store or at home. Another feature I liked is that there are two paper trays, one for 8x10 printer paper and one for 4x6 photo paper. Sounds simple, but who wants to continually be changing paper trays, not me hence why I never print photos from my current computer.

HP ENVY100 e-All-In-One Printer

HP ENVY100 e-All-in-One — This slimline printer is designed to complement modern home décor and is the planet’s first PVC-free printer.  Features include a high definition touchscreen display, whisper quiet operation and a retractable on-demand paper tray.

HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One series  — The first web connected printers for business from HP with ePrint and print apps to give professionals the ability to print on the go from mobile devices. Also, for the first time small businesses can scan to and print from the cloud, bringing convenient access to your documents without a PC. Business documents can be printed for up to 50 percent lower cost per page compared with laser printers while using up 50 percent less energy than color laser printers

HP Deskjet 3050 All-in-One Printer — Create and share everyday documents and web pages in a snap while saving energy and conserving resources.  This All-in-One is made with 35% recycled plastics and reduces paper use by up to 50% with double-sided printing.

Again we are covering up Sponge Bob. With nycgirlatheart.com and dancinghotdogs.com

Finally, you can see SpongeBob. With my blog husband, gaynycdad.com

HP Wall Art —  Available this fall, HP Wall Art allows families to personalize wall decor with fun and easy to mount images.  Initially, kid’s favorite Nickelodeon characters including SpongeBob, Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Go! and iCarly will be available.  This is such a cool feature that can really enhance your child's room.

Snapfish by HP - has begun building  a rich assortment of unique card designs as a result of adding 130 new designers and more than 3,000 new designs to its recently launched Publisher platform. Tons of new card designs for the upcoming holidays. I can't wait to get my Christmas cards started, I saw some cool designs.

Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Rose Center for Earth and Space on October 10

Both the Museum of Natural History and the Rose Center for Earth and Space museum is our favorite museum inthe city. So much so that we even suggest having playdates there.

So it surprises me that the Rose Center for Earth and Space is only 10 years old.

On October 10, the American Museum of Natural History will host a special celebration for all ages featuring dazzling performances, live concerts, hands-on activities, presentations by Museum scientists, and a special appearance by NASA astronaut Michael Massimin to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space

Festivities will include the world premiere of the new Big Bang presentation, which takes visitors on an exciting journey through the universe, and of the spectacular AstroBulletin showing a Science Bulletin about the last 10 years of astrophysics.

Celebrating 10 years of achievements in Earth and space science, the afternoon will feature:

  • Space Panorama: Watch British performer Andrew Dawson as he recreates the historic Apollo 11 flight using only hand movements, facial expressions, narration, music, and a table.
  •  AstroCappella: Rock out to sweet sounds of The Chromatics, a unique singing group that blends astronomy and music to create songs about the universe that are out of this world.
  • Native American Sky Stories: Listen to Grammy Award winner Joanne Shenandoah and historian Doug George present Native American Sky Stories with music, dance, and more.
  • Scientists, Activities, and More: Meet Museum scientists, view a Moon rock, experience work in space with astronaut glove boxes, and meet astronaut Michael Massimino.

To conclude the evening, Frederick P. Rose Hayden Planetarium Director Neil deGrasse Tyson (one of my favorite people whose love of space is simply infectious)  will host a special Rose Center Anniversary Isaac Asimov Debate, “Is Earth Unique?”

Date: Sunday, October 10, 10 am–5:45 pm
Location: Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space
Rose Center Anniversary Isaac Asimov Debate: LeFrak Theater
Admission: All performances and activities from 10 am–5:45 pm are free with Museum admission

Cynical New York Mom Goes to Cinderella Breakfast in the Magic Kingdom

Feminists get a bad rap. If you believe the pundits (and you know you are), feminists are anti-men, anti-family lesbians. Well I am am none of those things. I would just like to live in a world where I get paid and respected like the opposite sex.

That said, as I raise my daughter in a world that is pretty much still hostile to women and especially women if color, I have tried to instill a sense of purpose, self-esteem and of course, that she can do and be anything she wants. I have never been one of those moms that encourages the whole disney princess way of life yes, I bought one princess dress back when she was three and have only bought one Disney DVD, Cinderella, of course. My daughter never ran around in her dress like other little girls except when she had playdates so suffice to say I would not classify us a disney besotted family.

So when I was planning this trip, the first piece of Advice I received was to book a character meal, especially the princess meal. Okay. I will go along with the herd. Why not? I booked the Once Upon Time breakfast at Cinderella's Royal Table inside the Iconic Cinderella Castle. Who knew it was such a big deal? Not this clueless mom. We arrived 10 minutes early and all I could see was little girls in their disney princess dresses. And there was my daughter in her recently purcashed tinkerbell t-shirt and ballet skirt from Target. It was cute but no match against the sea of blue Cinderella ballgown. Since we had a few minutes, we wandered into the castle boutique. You could say it was fate, I think. And there they were nothing but princess dresses and accessories for every Disney princess character. So what did I suggest to my daughter? Would you like a Cinderella dress for the breakfast? She looked at me and bless her heart "what do you want mommy?" "let's get it but we have 10 minutes" Maybe it was guilt or my own internal feelings of inadequacy or that she doesn't have grandparents to buy her these things or that I never had Cinderella dress or that hey you are only 7 once but next thing you know we walked out of the store with a dress, crown and gloves. Well, as we stood in line waiting to have our picture taken with Cinderella, I was happy and so was my daughter. She was beaming. She really looked soo precious standing there with Cinderella.

After our picture, we went upstairs to the main dining hall where we were seated overlooking the cinderella's carousel. How apropos.

But as they announced each of the princesses, my daughter was visibly excited and thrilled to each of them. I could sense the level of excitement build as each princess approached our table for the requisite signing of the autograph and picture.

When they brought the picture over with my daughter and Cinderella and saw how beautiful she looked in her newly bought dress, I was
Moved to tears and I was happy that i
Made reservation against my better judgement because every little girl should have their princess moment.

A Day in the Magic Kingdom

First, let me apologize for any grammatical or long winded posts, the Boardwalk only has wi-fi in the lobby so I can't use my iPad and am typing on my phone. 13 hours, that's how long we spent at the Magic Kingdom. We arrived at 8:30am and left at 9:30pm. To say we are exhausted is an understatement.

We arrived early so we could have breakfast with Cinderalla in her castle at the Magic Kingdom. One of the advantages of being so early is that you get into the park before the general public.

We walked into main street and were greeted by fall decorations. But as soon as my daughter saw the magic kingdom it was over, we had to rush to get closer. The excitement she exuded was like a kid in a candy shop. We had 10 minutes to spare before our reservation so we wandered into the castle boutique. Goodness, me it was devoted to all the princesses. I promptly in 5 minutes broke down and bought a cinderalla dress for my daughter with requisite gloves. I was somewhat remorseful until I saw my daughter having her picture taken with cinderalla. PRICELESS!

After breakfast, we wandered around Fantasyland, riding the carousel, dumbo the flying elephant (fun for all ages) and more. My favorite show was Mickey's PhilharMagic which was a funny, 3-D romp. It truly was a 3-d movie in which it seemed you could touch the characters, not the crappy movies that are coming out now. Sadly, it's a small world after all was closed for renovation. On to Frontierland where of course the number1 attraction is Splash Mountain. Needless to say, we rode it 3 times, yes 3 times. That last hill is the doozy but fun. My least favorite show was the country bear jamboree. I am not sure why. Maybe because it's dated or that the "country music/down home" feeling seems insulting to me or that one of the female bears is drinking wine which daughter deemed inappropriate. Oh well part if the Disney lore.

Next onto Tommorrowland but in the way we happened

Tigers The Exhibition at the South Street Seaport

There are more than 20 fun interative exhbits that blend science, biology, ecology and natural history for you to explore. I would recommend the exhibit for children 5 and older as older children will get more from the videos and interactiving of each of the stations.

The exhibit runs through January 15, 2011.

Head to BJ's Wholesale Club for Back to School Supplies

It never occurred to me to head to BJ's Wholesale Club for back-to-school supplies and clothes but yesterday, I attended an event that provided me with a whole host of great picks for back-to-school supplies and clothes.

Here is just a few of my top picks in school supplies, clothes and lunchbox treats.

Crayola Carry All - $9.99                                                             Storage that holds crayons, markers, scissor, colored pencils and markers. This is the most practical all-in-on carry all, I have seen. This is great for when you want to keep the kids busy while you are out at dinner or traveling (maybe I would leave the glue at home when traveling on planes.)

Zebra Cadoozles # Mechanical Pencils, 40 ct. for $9.99                   Love that that these pencils never need sharpening and come in all these funky looking colors and patterns.

Expo Starets Starter Set afor $12.99 and

Expo Washables with Bonus Board for $5.99
The starter kit has 12 chisel tip markers and 4 fine point markers and comes with 2oz. cleaner and eraser. The Expo Washables and double side board allows your kids to draw, design and practice writing.   I just bought 4 dry erase markers for $4.99 plus a few weeks ago, I bought the same size board for $4.99 so either kit is a great value.

Apple and Eve Fruitables, 36 ct. Juice Boxes for $8.99                     Great for lunch box and just 25 cents per day.
Girl's Lined Hoodie for $16.99                                                            Great for children come Fall. All the girls loved this hoodie especially the faux-fur lining.
Carter's Quilted Jacket for Girls for $16.99                                       This jacket was so adorable and my daughter really wanted one. I loved the detailing ant the quilted Barbour style. Certainly, a lot less than a Barbour coat.

Artic Zone Lunch Bag and Bottle Kit for $9.99                                 Designed exclusively for BJ's, each bag comes with a water bottle, water bottle holder and sandwidh container. I have seen this in other stores for $15 and up.

BJ's carries so much more in school supplies, clothing options and lunchbox/snack options. For locations near you, visit www.bjs.com.
  • And remember that BJ's is the only wholesale club that accepts all manufacturer coupons.
  • And did you know that you can use a manufacturer's coupon for each item in a multi- pack (e.g. for a 10 multi-pack toothpaste, you can use 10 manufacturer's coupons.)
  • And finally, you can also stack coupons, meaning, you can use a manufacturer's coupon on top of a BJ's coupon.
Savings, that's what it's all about.
