Lavanila Laboratories Introduces Healthy Baby Collection and Happy, Healthy Baby Search

Recently, I had the pleasure of getting the scoop on Lavanila Laboratories' new line of products for babies, kids and sensitive adults.

Lavanila Laboratories was founded by Danielle Raynor and Laura DiGirolamo, self-proclaimed beauty junkies whose original line of products was developed because they weren't able to wear conventional perfumes.  Thus, Lavanila Laboratories was born. The idea of the line came as a result of Danielle's becoming a mother.

The Heathy Baby line will be launched on May 13 at Sephora stores and Sephora.com only.

The Heathy Baby line consists of the following products:
Healthy Baby Wash ($16) - Natural ph-balanced two-in-one shampoo and body wash w/30 natural ingredients.
Healthy Baby Lotion ($15) - Organic vanilla and chamomile nourish and protect your babies skin.
Healthy Baby Bottom ($15) - 100% natural formula to protect your baby's bottom
Healthy Baby Butter ($14) - Ultra-rich hydration with 30 vitamins and minerals to soothe dry skin.
Healthy Baby Block ($20) - Chemical-free combining titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, protects delicate skin from the sun. SPF 40 for babies over 6 months or with your pediatrician's recommendation.

What I liked about Healthy Baby:
  • 100% Natural ingredients
  • All ingredients have the common name on the packaging so you don't have to think about what it is (e.g. squalane = olive, cetyl alcohol = coconut)
  • Healthy baby ingredients like noni juice (??? me to, but it is an ancient polynesian botanical known as an anti-oxidant), organic calendula flower to heal and protect and aloe to nourish and hydrate
  • The scent is clean and natural, like a baby
  • All the basics - hypo-allergenic, pediatrician-approved, chemical-free, ph-balanced
  • Does not include petrochemicals, phthalates, propylene glycol, silicones, synthetic dyes and parabens
  • Packaging is recyclable
  • Loved the packaging, very classic
  • Made in the USA
  • The product can be used for kids and sensitive adults. I have no idea why but I somehow think that baby products can't be used anyone else but babies. This line would be great for everyone.
What I didn't like about Healthy Baby Wash:
  • Nothing except maybe the price. That said, when to brands like Kiehl's and Mustela, I would say that pricing is in line with those products.  Talking to the founders, I realized that I am pretty bad about reading labels especially when it comes to what I put on my skin. I really don't read the labels. So when I compare the ingredients of their product to the mega brands, I think it's worth integrating Lavanila products into my daily use for their  long-term benefits.

To kick off the launch, Lavanila is teaming with Sephora on a nationwide search for the new face of their healthy baby collection. The Happy, Healthy Baby Search will run from May 11 to June lst. The search will be open to children 6 months to 4 years old.

New Yorkers:
There is an open casting call at the Sephora Fifth Avenue store on Friday, May 14th from 2pm to 6pm. Parents are encouraged to bring their babies to meet the judges, have their pictures taken and to get free samples.

The first 50 parents to attend the casting call will receive a Sephora gift card with a mystery value worth up to $100.

Parents outside New York City:
Enter the contest at sephoracom/win/healthybaby from May 11 to June lst.

The grand prize winner will receive: an opportunity to be the face of Lavanila Baby, a three-day/two night trip to NYC, a professional photo shoot, two keepsake photo, the entire Healthy Baby collection and a $500 Sephora gift card. Two runner-ups will also receive the entire Healthy Baby collection and a $300 Sephora gift card.

    Nobody's Perfect Review

This past weekend, we went to see Nobody's Perfect at NYU Skirball Center. Nobody's Perfect is based on the children's book by Marlee Matlin and Doug Cooney.

Nobody's Perfect revolves around Megan, a deaf fourth grader planning her "positively purple" birthday party. Enter Alexis, the new girl. To Megan, Alexis is perfect: beauty, brains and athletic but she doesn't seem to like Megan. Megan thinks Alexis doesn't like her because she is deaf. Megan and Alexis are forced to work together on a science project. During their science project, Megan learns that Alexis has a secret.

What I liked about Nobody's Perfect:

    • The most obvious is that the lead actor is a deaf. We teach our kids that being different is okay but here is a life and blood example of being different, plus this might the first time our children are exposed to a deaf person
    • The next obvious is the Nobody's Perfect theme and that we shouldn't judge people by their outward appearance or on first impressions
    • The actors really embody the fourth graders sensibility and mannerisms, just funny.
    • Catchy music and funny dialogue
    • Introducing autism to young kids
    • Introducing signing to young kids
    • Diversity of the cast that include wide range of body shapes and color
    • The Q&A after the show. Such a great idea giving the kids the chance to ask questions. It really helps them get all their questions about deaf people and signing out of their curious systems.

What I did not like about Nobody's Perfect:
    • Why is the black girl's name, Keisha??? I don't want to cry racism but that's just plain insanity to give her that name. We can see she is black.
    • Rapping, why must we have to include raps into a child's musical. It's just annoying. I know the kids like it but they don't know what they don't know.
The best thing about the show is that my daughter was interested in learning how to sign. Just a wonderful thing.

Finally, I love the NYU Skirball Center Family Series, this was the second show we saw in the series, Darwin the Dinosaur was the first.

I so recommend taking a chance and  making an effort to check out the series when it starts back up again in the Fall.

My only wish is that the university and/or donors were able to fund at the minimum two shows a weekend. If you miss a show, you miss it and the opportunity to recommend seeing the show is lost.

Disclosure: Tickets were provided for the purposes of review only.
